Millennium Fellowship Project: DIABETES: Eat Right, Not Sweet
Diabetes: Eat Right, Not Sweet is a group project that aims to address diabetes, a ravaging systemic epidemic that has torn apart a lot of lives in Africa. Our project is aimed at creating awareness of the deleterious effects of this systemic condition. It will help the general public to be self-conscious about diet and lifestyle modifications and the need to regularly check their blood glucose levels as failure to do so can cause an array of wild and wide systemic complications.
During the Millennium fellowship period, we collaborated with the
Doctors and Nurses of St Anslem’s Catholic Church and the technical office of the Non-infectious and Non-communicable Diseases (NINCD) AAUMSA. We had two outreaches and an online infographics awareness.
Our first outreach was held on November 5th. During this event, a health talk on “Topic”, was delivered by Dr. Afusin at St Anslem’s Catholic Church, Irrua to a congregation of about 120 people. He talked extensively about the symptoms, signs, risk factors, and complications of diabetes and answered questions posed after. We also held a blood pressure check for men and women 40 years and older and the doctors help in interpreting the results and giving consultations.
Our second outreach was held on November 11th which was a blood glucose level screening for men and women 40 years and older totaling about 50 people. The doctors also provided free consultations.
We also held an online awareness to commemorate world diabetes day on November 14th. We uploaded flyers and infographics on our social media platforms. We raised the funding for the project through internal revenue and collaborations. Our project impacted about 150 people physically and over 100 people virtually.
