Millennium Fellowship Project: Towards a Healthy Adulthood

Towards a Healthy Adulthood:
Scientific evidence has over the years, shown that non-communicable diseases (diseases not transmittable from person to person) often follow a life course. They mostly occur in adulthood following prior exposure to certain modifiable risk factors in earlier phases of life. However, premature occurrence of these diseases is now a common feature in societies as younger people expose themselves more and more to a number of predisposing lifestyle practices. The "Towards a Healthy Adulthood" project is an initiative aimed at creating a platform for adolescents and young people like me to learn the various risk factors capable of making them develop features of NCDs in the near future. At the same time, this project will provide an opportunity for the participants to acquire lifestyle modification skills for sustainable health. The starting point shall be on our campus, from where I hope to extend the coverage to communities around here and others.

About the Millennium Fellow

Chiamaka Ozoh is a medical student at Babcock University, Ogun State, Nigeria. She is driven to educate children and young adults on identifying certain health risks early and how lifestyle modification also plays a role in good health. She hopes to achieve all these while also building advocates to improve care for people living with Diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. As a person living with diabetes herself in a developing country, she understands the invaluable role of treatment supporters in daily life. Through her project, she aims to increase knowledge and awareness about diabetes and other non-communicable diseases in her community. After she graduates, Chiamaka aspires to practice as a medical doctor and also continue her work advocating for better care for persons with diabetes.
