Millennium Fellowship Project: Project 3.1/7 Improving Reproductive and Maternal Wellbeing

Our project focused on the maternal and reproductive health of women of reproductive ages in the Tudun wada community of Jos in Nigeria. The project aimed to improve reproductive and maternal wellbeing by carrying out a medical outreach in the community, the outreach entailed a pre -outreach publicity two days prior to the outreach date where we went to the houses in the community and invited women to the outreach location. An education session, where we educated the pregnant women on practices during and after pregnancy to help improve their health and that of their babies, the non-pregnant women were educated on safe sexual practices, hygiene and healthy practices.
A vitals session where the vitals of the women were taken including pulse rate, blood pressure and Basal metabolic rate to determine their health status.
A screening session: where the women were screened for diseases that are a major burden of the community which are malaria, HIV, syphilis and hepatitis, to help them know their status.
A counseling session: to provide medical advice based on the results of the various screening tests.
A gifting session: where the women were given condoms to improve safe sex practices, mosquito nets to prevent malaria and sanitary pads to improve menstural hygiene.
Cleaning: a clean up of the area used for the outreach.
