Millennium Fellowship Project: E-ssentials: Supporting Aged-Out Foster Care and Homeless Youths
My project revolves around the development and establishment of an on-campus resource closet system at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) that provides essential items to students at FGCU. Working with Student Care Services (SCS) and Town and Gown, E-ssentials will be able to have a form located on the SCS website that students will be able to fill out and then be emailed when their items are ready for pickup. These items can range from deodorant to hair care to laundry detergent. The goal of this project is to increase the support provided to individuals who have experienced the detrimental effects that happen as a result of experiencing foster care or homelessness. While this project is targeted towards that population of students, E-ssentials will be open for all students to utilize. Through this project, I hope to be able to lift some pressures and burdens off of those who have fought hard to be where they are and who want to be able to pursue their education without having to worry about accessing essential items. My vision is that E-ssentials will not only help support these individuals, but also spread awareness to the issue of foster care and homeless that is so prevalent in the world today as innocent children are being exposed to it at such an early age and many are left to deal with the aftermath alone. I hope E-ssentials can help fight against this issue by providing consistent support and a caring atmosphere for years and years to come.
