Millennium Fellowship Project: Climate change and sustainability
The purpose of the project is to understand the impact of climate change on agriculture sector
of Hunza valley Gilgit Baltistan and how the climate has change the living standard of the
people. Communities living in Hunza Valley are agro-Based and depend on snow and glacier
water for agriculture and other domestic uses. The objective of the study was to know about the
perspectives of farmers that what issues they have faced after climate change and what are the
reasons of climate change. Temperature has increased throughout the year, winter has become
colder and summer becomes warmer than the past. The data was gathered from the farmers of
Hunza valley. In-depth Interviews were taken. The data was collected from the farmers of the
valley and the sample size of 10 respondents was taken from different group of people. In
addition to this the findings identify that the major reasons of climate change in Hunza Gilgit
Baltistan was the flow of tourism, deforestation and human activities which leads to climate
change. We have concluded that the land and its agriculture are being affected by climate
changes in different ways e.g., variations in annual rainfall, average temperature, heat waves,
change in weather patterns, floods, global change of atmospheric CO2 or ozone level. We human
beings are the climate change agent. We all have a responsibility to take care of our planet and
its resources.
