Millennium Fellowship Project: EDULight

On several occasions, my team and I met children in this neighborhood (Gidan Kwano community) who weren't in school, some not even due to financial constraints but because of a lack of exposure to the importance of quality education, which, of course, caused deprivations. Parents of these children do not know the value of education; hence, they did not feel even the slightest remorse for not educating their wards, although some complained of poverty.

The situation gave rise to the proposition of the project "EDULight: Illuminating Educational Prospects in Gidan Kwano Community," which aims to curb this.

The major objective of the project is to increase the turn-ups of the locals to register their wards at school and the ones in school to improve their academic prowess by instilling excellence in them. If this is achieved, the project will be a success. Therefore, the percentage increase of students or pupils in schools after the outreach and the academic reports serve as benchmarks for measuring the success rate.

Recently, the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) revealed that there are about 743,056 children who are not attending school in the state, which calls for concern. This project aims at promoting United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 of Quality Education, and the success of the project spurs this.

Measurable Goals:
- Awareness campaign for parents and wards.
- Interactive sessions in classes.
- Provision of educational resources.
- Conducting surveys to know the age distribution of every child in different schools.
- Establishing the basis for a relationship between pupils of the community and the MCN team.
