Millennium Fellowship Project: WasteSmart ICT

In our Project Waste Smart ICT: Say no to landfills, we aim to create a sustainable waste management system for our campus. We want to build a full-fledged data report on the types and quantities of waste produced by the campus in a certain period and find ways to decrease the number or convert them into energy, by-products and even devise plans to treat it in-house. We aim to lessen the number of garbage/landfill-picking trucks coming to our campus.

Goals we wish to accomplish. The first step is to create a waste audit report on the basis of which we plan to conduct our project. Through the data, we plan to lead research on upcycling the waste collected upon segregation of the waste into different categories like e-waste, plastic waste, biodegradable, etc. We will decide on their upcycling depending on the type and amount of waste we collect. For example, if we have a large amount of LDPE, HDPE, and PET waste, we can make recycled tiles out of the plastic blend of the three which can be further used. Similarly, with biodegradable waste, we plan to use it for composting and making fertilizers.

About the Millennium Fellow

Komal Bhutra is a senior polymer science & engineering student at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India. She wants to help make our cities more sustainable and enhance the current waste management system. Taking one step at a time and starting from her university campus itself, Komal wants to first focus on creating a Waste Smart ICT. As a responsible polymer engineer, she aims to curb the impact of plastic waste on the environment by upcycling and converting it into a useful resource with the help of science and technology.
