Millennium Fellowship Project: WasteSmart ICT

The project, "WasteSmartICT: No Landfills," initiated by the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Mumbai, is a comprehensive and transformative approach to waste management and sustainability. It aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Responsible Consumption and Production, Industry, Innovation and infrastructure, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Selected for the United Nations and Millennium Campus Network's Millennium Fellowship, the project aims to make ICT a net-zero waste campus.

Key Initiatives:
A Unified Vision: Focused on waste management, awareness, and sustainability to make ICT a net-zero waste campus.
Waste Segregation and Awareness: Comprehensive waste segregation program with awareness campaigns targeting students and staff.
Dustbin Distribution: Strategically placed dustbins for responsible waste disposal, minimizing littering.
Collaboration with Faculty: Engaging faculty in brainstorming sessions to optimize waste generation practices, especially in laboratories.
Chemical Management: Laboratory surveys and data collection for effective chemical waste management, including the establishment of a chemical databank.

Zonal Approach:
Zone 1 (Biomass Treatment and Value Addition): Addresses biomass waste with innovative treatment methods and research for value-added products.
Zone 2 (Educational Buildings and Laboratories): Focuses on chemical waste disposal from laboratories, introducing designated drums for safe disposal after neutralization.
Zone 3 (Residential Areas): Identifies key waste types and implements awareness campaigns, including a biodigester initiative for organic waste and segregated garbage bins outside hostels.

Future Goals:
Continued research for sustainable biomass waste practices.
Implementation of a chemical databank for efficient management.
Integration of educational materials to reduce food waste and promote responsible disposal.
Establishment of a biogas plant for organic waste and renewable energy contribution.

Formation of a Sustainable Campus Club:
A club comprising passionate individuals committed to championing sustainable practices.
Ensures the seamless continuation of WasteSmartICT activities, including daily operations, waste management, awareness campaigns, and ongoing projects.
Implements a structured system for monitoring and addressing waste-related issues, adapting to emerging challenges.
