Millennium Fellowship Project: Engineering for Positive Change
The JKUAT Society of Engineering Students is a club that enables holistic growth of its
members through various committes. In November 2022, I took over as the
chairperson of the Projects Committee of the society. The Projects Committee aims at
improving the technical skills of its members through talks, trainings, and
competitions. However, this has not always been achieved due to a myriad of reasons.
As the incoming chair, I am working to meet the core goals of the committee. To start
of, I am enlisting the help of a think tank with members representing various
engineering disciplines including; mechanical, electrical, marine, mining,
mechatronics, e.t.c. This representation in the committee has no t been achieved in
the past and students from mechanical, mining, marine, and civil have been at a
disadvantage. The think tank is responsible for brainstorming and spearheading of
committee activities.
The second part is organizing for technical trainings, competitions, and group projects.
Technical trainings are key in increasing the skill set of members as they cover areas
that are not taught in class but are a neccessity in the job market. This will require
organization for the trainings in terms of time, location, topic, and in getting qualified
trainers. The Projects Committee will aslo organize for competitions that are
appropriate for the skill level of its members. This could be pursued through a partnership with corporate entities as well as university personel.
A key part of the committee is the group projects which are done by the committee
members as a whole. This facilitates transfer of knowledge and skills from the more
experienced members to the younger members. The committee aims to have 1 or 2
successful group projects during its tenure.
