Millennium Fellowship Project: Empowering Youth For Community Health Impact

Our project is a health-effective project implemented through youth work. The project started with problems that I observed in the GP Unit (now called the Primary Health Care Center, which is more capable and should provide quality primary health care to the economically disadvantaged sections of our community. Up to about 200 patients per day) and the clinical annexes of the affiliated hospitals. In my ministry, I have seen disparities in health literacy in my communities, as well as the inappropriate and ineffective use of medications and medical devices, such as the metered-dose inhaler (MDI), a device that delivers a certain amount of medication into the lungs as a short aerosol treatment that the patient usually inhales. (In our environment, this is the most commonly used delivery device for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory diseases.) Given the context of my findings, my Millennium Fellowship project includes a collaborative project to address these findings with students at my university. We plan to produce newsletters that contain health information in a language our patients understand (Amharic and Affan Oromo) and reflect the most common health problems in our region. The project also aims to produce demonstration videos on the use of metered dose inhalers for asthma patients, self-monitoring of the diabetic foot and treatment guidelines for chronic non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and asthma. Our brochures and presentation videos are reviewed by industry experts before appearing on waiting area screens, social media platforms and university websites.
