Millennium Fellowship Project: Empowering Youth For Community Health Impact

In response to pressing concerns observed during my dedicated clinical rotation at the Family Medicine Unit and esteemed affiliated Hospitals, alongside my team, I am thrilled to present the 'Empowering Youth For Community Health Impact' project. Aiming to address these issues systematically, this initiative harnesses the energy and potential of young individuals to create a tangible impact.

The project centers on two critical aspects: improving health literacy and optimizing medical equipment usage. Specifically, I witnessed challenges in health literacy within our community and encountered suboptimal utilization of medical devices like the metered-dose inhaler (MDI), an essential tool for treating respiratory conditions. This initiative seeks to rectify these issues through a collaborative effort with students from my college.

Our approach involves developing informative flyers in locally spoken languages, Amharic and Afan Oromo, to ensure the effective dissemination of health information. These flyers will address prevalent health concerns while bridging the health literacy gap. Furthermore, we intend to produce instructional videos demonstrating proper MDI usage, diabetic foot self-examination, and medication management for chronic noncommunicable diseases. These materials will be reviewed by experts before being made accessible through waiting areas, social media platforms, and college websites.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, and influenced by UN Academic Impact Principle 2: Capacity Building, this project aspires to directly impact around 15,000 patients through daily interactions. The resources created will extend their reach, benefiting a broader audience.

Our success will be gauged by the extent to which our materials are accessed and understood by our target demographic. By enhancing health literacy and medical equipment usage, we aim to make a substantial contribution to the well-being of our community.
