Millennium Fellowship Project: Green Campus Initiative: Exploring Sustainability in the HUB Renovation

Our university has recently announced plans to renovate the Haupert Union Building (HUB); a unique building designed to gather and serve students, staff, and community members visiting the university. Our project looks to analyze the new design for efficient use of sustainable resources and environmentally friendly operations and offer solutions that will enhance positive impacts on the environment. Our cohort is also interested in analyzing the environmental impacts of the renovation during the construction period and developing innovative ways to minimize those impacts. We intend to continue meeting with the facility teams to understand the construction plan and collaborate with them to integrate our ideas into the HUB renovation plan. We are also interested in doing a risk assessment of the project plan, specifically the handling of waste disposal, current use relocation, and material use, to mitigate any potential environmental impacts. Partnering with our campus food service provider, we will collaborate to expand their sustainability strategy and improve upon operations emphasizing on waste reduction and educating students on more sustainable practices.
