Millennium Fellowship Project: SUPERMARKET NUTRITION SURVEY AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION
A report on supermarket nutrition survey and community education conducted by Dickson Godspower Etim and Nzute Nnenna Victory
Based on the findings, it was noted that shopping in supermarkets contributes to higher consumption of processed and highly processed foods and lower consumption of unprocessed foods. Compared to small traditional shops, supermarkets can better exploit economies-of-scale. Hence, certain foods can be offered at lower prices. This is especially relevant for non-perishable processed food items. Since when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life, supermarket can increase the level of food accessibility, affodability (Cheaper access to processed foods). This can improve food security and nutrition for very poor population segments. However, heavy reliance on processed foods does not necessarily improve dietary quality and can intensify the obesity pandemic. Hence, the spread of supermarkets in developing countries can have both positive and negative nutrition and health effects.
We thought people living in a particular community in umuahia the importance of eating healthy and fresh foods and to avoid highly processed foods mostly supermarket and shopping Malls.
