Millennium Fellowship Project: Mission Resilience: Climate Resilience in Mission Hill and Roxbury

The Mission Resilience project aimed to assess the climate resiliency efforts of the Mission Hill and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston, Massachusetts. Our first step was to connect with organizations and individuals that are familiar with climate impact mitigation. We have learned how to be more organized and ambitious leaders throughout this project. Our efforts to meet with residents and community organizations show our hard work and perseverance. We utilized on-campus resources such as Northeastern University’s Climate Justice and Sustainability Hub and other Millennium Fellows on our campus. We researched previous climate resiliency studies conducted by organizations and the City of Boston to examine how climate change has so far been impacting these communities. We discovered that the Roxbury and Mission Hill neighborhoods are most vulnerable to the climate change consequences of riverine flooding, stormwater flooding, and extreme heat. Residents in these neighborhoods have already experienced these impacts, and it is predicted that they will only worsen as climate change progresses. We spoke with community members of these neighborhoods to gather their input about the climate change consequences they have experienced and which ones they are most concerned about in the future. We observed that residents in these neighborhoods mostly agree with the City of Boston’s report on climate vulnerability, and they often support ambitious climate policy. We discovered that community members in these neighborhoods often want the City to implement more and better climate disaster emergency protocols for when environmental disasters strike, especially considering that other cities and towns in the region have recently experienced detrimental climate consequences.
