Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Shaurya
Project Shaurya is about creating awareness and overcoming the stigma around Polycystic ovary syndrome/ disease (PCOS/PCOD). It is estimated one in five (20%) Indian women suffer from PCOS. Women with PCOS are at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infertility. If not monitored in time, the condition can have serious health impacts.
After interacting with girls from all over the country in my college, I realised how common PCOD/PCOS really is,
Since PCOD/PCOS is very common as established above, there is a need to talk about it. Unfortunately only a small subset has access to healthcare. Moreover, very few actually realise the need to visit a gynaecologist to get it diagnosed. Even though it is one of the most common endocrine disorders in women, up to 70% of cases go undiagnosed.
In our society for a young girl to visit a gynaecologist is accompanied with a lot of judgements, and thus chances of diagnosis of PCOD/PCOS becomes slimmer. Thus, it is the need of the hour to create awareness about this. With this project, we aim to reach the youth, so that even the young men of our society are educated enough to empower their family and friends to have conversation on this without any hesitancy and overcome the taboo around PCOD/PCOS.
