Millennium Fellowship Project: Shuchi

Our project aspires to create a sustainable society by altering our perspectives on waste management.
Through societal sensitization, we hope to bring about change at the individual level and create a decentralised waste management system.
We aim the segregation of waste into broad categories namely organic waste, recyclable plastic waste, hazardous waste, and non-recyclable waste.
Following segregation, our goal is to compost biodegradable waste for use in campus-based horticultural programmes.
Additionally, the recyclable plastic would be sold through public and private authorities, collecting additional revenue for sensitization programmes and adopting sustainable alternatives.
The hazardous waste that currently ends up in landfills mixed with other types of waste would be sorted aside for secure disposal.
Finally, non-biodegradable waste like single-use plastics would be eliminated through negotiations with the administration, and recycling drives, where economic and practical alternatives would be explored.
Through this project, we aim to replace non-sustainable waste disposal methods, reduce waste generation and ensure proper waste addressal.

Our project would include sensitisation drives, for initiating change at individual levels, cleanliness drives with volunteers and fundraising programmes to support the initiative which along with the scrap waste sold and the saleable compost would be the revenue pillars for the programme.
