Millennium Fellowship Project: Shuchi

Our project aims at achieving a sustainable society, by reworking our approach
towards waste. We aim to achieve a decentralised waste management system by
bringing change at the individual level through societal sensitisation.

We aim the segregation of waste into broad categories namely organic waste,
recyclable plastic waste, hazardous waste, and non-recyclable waste.
Post-segregation, we aim at composting biodegradable waste, which is further to be
used in campus-based horticultural programmes.
Further, the recyclable plastic would be sold through government/ private
functionaries, raising further funds for sensitisation programmes.
The hazardous waste which currently gets mixed with other kinds of waste, ending up
in landfills would be set aside for safe disposal.
Finally, non-biodegradable waste like single-use plastics would be eliminated through
negotiations with the administration, and recycling drives, where economic and
practical alternatives would be explored.

Through our programme, we aim to replace non-sustainable waste disposal methods,
reducing waste generation and ensuring proper waste addressal.x

Our project would include sensitisation drives, for initiating change at individual levels,
cleanliness drives with volunteers and fundraising programmes to support the
initiative which along with the scrap waste sold and the saleable compost would be the
revenue pillars for the programme.
