Millennium Fellowship Project: ReducePlast

Plastic pollution stands out as a critical issue, not only due to its adverse environmental effects but also its effects on aquatic ecosystems. The core objective of this project revolves around informing the public regarding the harmful consequences of plastic on our surroundings. The strategy involves establishing designated points for plastic collection throughout the campus. By aligning with the sustainable development goal of addressing climate change and leveraging scientific expertise and knowledge, our aim is to devise methods for transforming plastic into non-harmful compositions, thereby minimizing its ecological impact. The project encompasses several key aspects: comprehensive research, a thorough review of existing literature, and the initiation of experimental processes in the laboratory aimed at converting plastic into less detrimental forms. Through these efforts, the intention is to curtail the adverse climate effects linked to plastic pollution. Additionally, a significant concern is the combustion of plastic, which contributes to global warming. To address this, our project will feature a series of awareness campaigns and seminars designed to educate individuals about the dangers of plastic pollution and the detrimental consequences of its burning. Over the outlined time frame, our focal points include formulating sustainable solutions to combat plastic pollution, raising awareness among the population, and starting and setting up a laboratory-based research dedicated to resolving this pressing issue.

About the Millennium Fellow

From watching ants build and rebuild their ”castle” for hours to composting kitchen waste in my tiny orchard, being an only child of working parents gave me an opportunity to nurture a connection with nature in many different ways. But the connection had a cost. With time, the sense of disorder and frustration from plastics in my compost grew into something bigger: climate anxiety. I believe that environmentalism demands empathy and OCD of order and I happen to have both, but apparently, letter of recommendations from friends are not accepted.
