Millennium Fellowship Project: Garbage Management for Domboshava Showground Community

The project was about garbage management for a small village just outside the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare. Domboshava Showground can be described as a growing village that has been urbanizing for the past decade. The community had little to no knowledge of the consequences of waste mismanagement (dumping along roadsides). This was evident through the heaps of waste along roadsides. In a quest to educate a few, the student decided to carry out a project on garbage management. The student started by forming a small group of young boys and girls to help carry out the project.
The project involved door-to-door campaigns educating and advocating against waste mismanagement. Roadshows were also carried out frequently as a way of providing awareness. With the help of the local municipality and other well-wishers donations, we were able to collect all the waste and dispose of it at Pomona waste management center where it is processed and converted to energy. As a team of young vibrant youths, we managed to buy bin liners and donated them to many households so that they could pack in their waste accordingly. We also managed to liaise with the municipality of the area on their resumption on garbage collection since they had long stopped.
