Millennium Fellowship Project: They Deserve More Promising Futures

We noticed that children in migrant families in Shanghai suffer from a shortage of education not only because of restricted educational access but also left behind due to an information gap in terms of what ways they could choose after middle school graduation and what materials they need to enter higher education. We wondered: what can we do as NYUSH students? We find that with our leadership skills to organize students, abilities to do research on policies, access to more professional information and guidance, and valid connections with NGOs and experts, we could devote ourselves to supporting these students with their future planning after we obtain training from NYU Shanghai's Center for career development. We have contacted NGOs to support us in finding more children in migrant families. We as students work as volunteers to write and distribute future-planning brochures and organize career education talks for families. It is important to have an influential foundation that gives enough money and an even greater name for it to organize events and attract experts. We anticipate that the NGO, NYUshanghai, and the Foundation will collaborate to create a platform that offers long-term volunteer training, counseling on career planning, and networking opportunities with migrant worker families. We expect a sustainable helping platform always be available even faced with global crises like covid-19.
