Millennium Fellowship Project: Less Stigma, More Love!

The project "Less Stigmas, More Love!" is mainly about reducing the public’s stigmas and discrimination towards people living with HIV in urban Shanghai as well as letting more young people know knowledge about HIV/AIDS and the real state of people living with HIV. The number of people living with HIV is currently increasing in China, especially among young people. However, in general, the public still doesn’t have enough knowledge about HIV/AIDS.
Though with proper treatment, the viral load of HIV in people living with HIV can be low enough to not be tested and spread, their lives won’t be influenced as much as people might think, and it’s not their fault for being infected, people living with HIV are still facing many stigmas, stereotypes, and discriminations. At many moments, the stigmas and discriminations that people living with HIV are facing affect them much more than the virus itself. Reducing stigmas and discriminations toward HIV/AIDS and people living with HIV is a big deal!
This project contains the following four parts:
1. Working with a local NGO in Shanghai for an art support group program;
2. Continue my ethnographic research with people living with HIV to know more about their current state, specifically about the discriminations and problems they are facing;
3. Investigate young people’s current knowledge about HIV/AIDS to better spread knowledge of HIV/AIDS in the future;
4. Create a website and share stories of people living with HIV and people whose work is relevant to HIV/AIDS and people living with HIV anonymously with their permission to let the public know more about HIV/AIDS and people living with HIV, with the purpose of reducing public’s stigmas and discrimination towards people living with HIV.
