Millennium Fellowship Project: Decoding Morality: The Paradox of Sex Work Legality

This research project endeavors to conduct a thorough examination of prostitution in India, delving into the intricate dynamics of consent, ethical considerations, patriarchal influences, and societal attitudes. The primary objectives include unraveling the complexities surrounding consent within the realm of sex work, critically analyzing the ethical implications of diverse moral perspectives, and addressing the patriarchal foundations that contribute to gender disparities within the industry. The study will trace the historical evolution of prostitution in India, considering ancient practices, colonial influences, and contemporary socio-economic factors that propel individuals into sex work. Additionally, the project aims to evaluate challenges faced by sex workers, such as health risks and vulnerabilities, while exploring empowerment initiatives and legal reforms to enhance their well-being and agency. By examining the intersections of trafficking and exploitation with consent, the research seeks to shed light on the blurred lines between consensual sex work and non-consensual situations, utilizing case studies to illustrate the complex dynamics at play. Ultimately, the project aspires to contribute nuanced insights and propose comprehensive policies that prioritize consent, challenge societal stigma, and foster a supportive environment for individuals engaged in the sex industry, advancing the ongoing discourse on the ethical dimensions of sex work.
