Millennium Fellowship Project: Lead and Code Youth Technology Mentorship Program (#Linux)

In Nigeria, there are a significant number of Nigerian youth, especially students, who fall into two categories: those aspiring to learn technology and those who have already acquired tech skills. However, they face common challenges. These individuals, regardless of their background, may lack exposure to the diverse opportunities available in the tech field, or they may lack guidance on how to navigate and make the most of these opportunities.

Additionally, some of these aspiring individuals may be uncertain about which specific software or tech career path to choose, and they lack guidance on how to make informed decisions. They also struggle to find a clear roadmap that outlines the steps they need to take to build a successful tech career. Furthermore, many of them may not be familiar with essential tools required for a tech career, such as GitHub and other vital skills.

Solution:
To address these shared challenges and empower these young Nigerians, particularly students, the "Youth Technology Mentorship Program (Lead and Code #LINUX)" provided mentorship, guidance, and exposure to the world of technology and software engineering. This initiative instilled the hope, break down barriers, and inspired participants to believe in their ability to excel in the tech industry.

The program offered a structured series of webinars led by successful student speakers, focusing on topics such as open source contributions, securing internships, career development, freelancing, and data science. Additionally, there were dedicated sessions to tutor participants on important tools and skills required for a tech career, including GitHub and other essential technologies.

Through these sessions, participants gained practical knowledge and hands-on experience in using these tools, ensuring that they are well-prepared for the demands of a tech career. The program also created a supportive community through a moderated WhatsApp group where participants can ask questions and network.

By equipping these young people with technology skills, career insights, and a belief in their limitless potential, the program intends to foster a new generation of software professionals and problem solvers in Nigeria. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between their current circumstances and the wealth of opportunities available in the ever-changing tech world.

About the Millennium Fellow

Usman Akinyemi, hailing from rural Nigeria, a Computer Science and AI student at Plaksha University transcended barriers to emerge as a technology education advocate. With fervor, he mastered coding after high school, even participating in a community-focused hackathon. This turning point ignited Usman's mission: he volunteered, educating young minds about tech and leadership. His impact widened as he joined Lead and Code and DesignIT Africa , mentoring African teenagers. Usman's dream is to shatter perceived limitations by creating a program that educates on technology, academic excellence, and more.
