Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Raksha: Enriching Lives of Elderly

This project aimed to cater to the abandoned elderly people in the society. We chose to work upon this issue since there had been a surge in the abandonment of senior citizens across the world. These people were left on the roads to die and hence, they were the most marginalized people in the so-called ‘Modern Society’.

We undertook this project in three cohorts:
First, the project provided the elderly people with direct aid in the form of food grains and other essential commodities to be used in their day-to-day lives. This was provided directly to the old age care home.
Secondly, through this project, we made the senior citizens aware of their legal rights with respect to ‘The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act’ of India. It was essential to make them informed about the remedies they had so that they could avail those whenever faced with an unfavorable situation.
Lastly, we also conducted interactive sessions with the elderly people to cater to their emotional well-being. We sat back and listened to their version of their story and tried to provide them with the love and warmth that they deserved.
