Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Devi

Devi' is a Sanskrit word that means goddess, and is representative of the intended beneficiaries of this project: millions of domestic workers across India whose labour plays such a crucial role but continues to be undervalued. The aim of Project Devi is to provide greater visibility to the labour of female domestic workers and to empower them with skills that enable them to transition to more gainful employment in the organized sector in the long run. We sought to achieve this goal through various educational modules that focused on language skills, digital literacy, and awareness about rights that were disseminated by using readily available platforms like Whatsapp and Youtube. Our long- term goal is to help these women launch small businesses that can provide an alternate source of income for them and help them become financially self-sufficient.

About the Millennium Fellow

Teesha Singh is a final year student at the Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi. Her degree in political science has taught her to always question why things are a certain way instead of merely accepting them as the status quo, and it was this worldview that encouraged her to contribute to bringing about positive change in society through her project. She has previously worked with organizations that focus on education, empowering blue-collar workers, and the intersection of gender and politics, and these experiences shaped the way she envisioned her own role in driving social impact within her community. She is passionate about the advancement of women's rights and hopes to strive towards greater economic inclusion of historically marginalized communities through her journey with the Millennium Fellowship and thereafter.
