Millennium Fellowship Project: Mental Health and Peer Educator

Peer Education is used as a strategy to role model health-promoting behavior and to shift peer norms on HIV and AIDS and other health and social issues as support to curriculum implementation. Being a peer educator in the HIV/AIDS Campus Support Unit (CHASU) which is based at the University of KwaZulu Natal, we are all about promoting health and wellness among students on campus. Encouraging students to go for testing, and counseling, and try to live a healthy lifestyle which will bring a positive impact on their lives. In addition, the distribution of contraceptives, where students are able to prevent unplanned babies, diseases that are contaminated through sexual intercourse, and also various ways to practice safe sex. It is always good to assist and give constructive advice to students about taking care of their well-being and health. As peer educators, we also focus on gender-based violence awareness, making sure that the campus is gender-based violence-free or that it is a safe space for everyone. Also, going deeper, it is also important to try and minimize food insecurity on our campus. We can only do that by giving back to the students, by discovering those students who are financially needy, who can not make any end meets when it comes to nutritious food. Targeting orphans or those students who do not receive monthly allowances and those who do not have funding whilst coming from a poor background family.
