Millennium Fellowship Project: Forest Remediation in Kenya

Our project for the Millennium Fellowship is a research project that is through the organization NYADEC out of Kenya, Africa. The objectives of our research are to estimate the carbon in each tree to determine which species have more carbon, obtain overall carbon stock in the forest, know the biodiversity in the forest, and assess soil carbon. We researched the following variables for erosion control: water absorption, ground cover, and the depth of the roots. For the variable of carbon sequestration, we looked at the total amount of carbon sequestered per year of growth and the average lifecycle of the plant.

About the Millennium Fellow

Melody Swartz grew up in Alaska. She spent her childhood watching glaciers melt and winters get warmer. This sparked in her a passion for environmental activism and with it a thirst for knowledge that will never be fully satiated. After attending culinary school for a year after high school, she transferred to the University of New England in august of 2021. Now entering her senior year, Melody is determined to make a difference in her community and leave a mark on her university before she moves on to pursue her PhD.
