Millennium Fellowship Project: UNE S.W.A.P. Surplus With A Purpose

UNE S.W.A.P. stands for Surplus With A Purpose. The Millennium Fellows noticed that at the end of each semester, and throughout the year, there are massive amounts of waste created by students. Most of this “waste” are items that are still in good condition. The purpose of UNE S.W.A.P. is to reduce the amount of waste this campus creates by giving the community a place to bring their unwanted but still usable items. Earth’s ECO, UNE's environmental club on campus, saw this issue a while back and started to run Pop-up Thrift Shops and “Switch or Ditch”. These two programs were both highly successful and well-received by the student body. The success of these programs outgrew their capacity and showed that a larger scale solution is needed to fully tackle this issue on campus. The establishment of UNE S.W.A.P. will continue Earth Eco’s work and offer a permanent solution to waste production on campus.
