Millennium Fellowship Project: Good Health and Healthy Living: Combating Alcohol Abuse and NSAIDs Misuse

The project focuses on Combating alcohol abuse and the Misuse of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking that interferes with day-to-day activities. Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases and other serious problems including: High blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, stroke e.t.c. In Nigeria, the use and abuse of alcohol is becoming prevalent amongst secondary school students. From a data collected, the results showed that male secondary school students moderately consumed beer (55.2%) and local cocktails (51.5%), whereas their female counterparts reported rare consumption of these 2 alcoholic drinks (44.8%; 48.5% respectively). NSAIDs in layman’s terms means ‘pain killer’ i.e. they are drugs that are used to lessen pain, inflammation and the accompanying fever. The misuse of painkillers by both the youths and adults has become more rampant over the years. Long-term painkillers abuse can lead to serious cardiovascular issues, heart attacks and heart disease. Most people who abuse painkillers end up with peptic ulcer. The prevalence of substance abuse in Nigeria and the negative impact on public health and safety necessitate that all hands must be on deck to curtail the challenge in the country hence the need to educate secondary school students who would invariably educate their people at home.
