Millennium Fellowship Project: Climate Fiction Writing Competition 1.0
The Climate Fiction Writing Competition was a contest designed to be a powerful tool for Climate Action advocacy as it aimed to help people to understand more clearly how climate change affects us every day, both directly and indirectly.
The Cli-Fi Writing Competition not only advocates for SDG13 (Climate Action), but also, SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG15 (Life on Land), SDG14 (Life below Water), SDG16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals).
My aim for this competition was to encourage more young persons to lend their voices to promote climate action and other sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The Climate Fiction Writing Competition kick-started on the 16th of October, 2023 and spanned till the 27th of October, 2023. A total of 31 entries were received from students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions across Nigeria in response to the prompt; “In 500 words or less, write a flash fiction piece that explores a young person’s journey in a society deeply affected by climate change. Show how they harness their unique abilities and passions to inspire change within their community and contribute to a sustainable future.”
The winning entry, along with a well-written article on climate action and steps that can be taken towards sustainability, was published in the Herald Newspaper, a news outlet with over 5000 audiences.
