Millennium Fellowship Project: Equihealth: Bridging Health Disparities

The Equihealth: bridging health disparities project is a collective action and community giving back intervention aimed at tackling selected aspects of the sustainable development goals from a people centred perspective. Our strategic objective is to initiate and lead positive actionable and impactful steps towards attaining SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 3- Good health and wellbeing SDG 3: Good health and Well-being We recognize that health is wealth and so our strategic goal is to contribute to a healthier and wealthier environment where everyone will reside peacefully. Our approach in accelerating the SDG 3 is to mobilize the community, especially women and children and sensitize them on vaccine preventable diseases and healthy living. We plan to hold regular health talks and seminars for these groups of people in collaboration with the general out patient and maternity department at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching hospital and the Rotaract club of Nnewi, as well as carry out free outreach programs to help members of the community that are unable to get medications because of lack of funds. There will also be reusable nets for the nurses to administer vaccines to children under the age of five years. Alongside that, we would collaborate with the pediatrics department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University to sensitize breastfeeding mothers about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and how to properly breast feed their babies. Key points of interest that will be discussed in the seminars and health talks with young girls and women will be to sensitize and create awareness on their right to a healthy and respectful sexual relationship. They will also be sensitized on how and where they can access affordable reproductive healthcare services that are safe, inclusive and appropriate for them. Also, they will be provided with information on how to access accurate and safe services in the case of unplanned pregnancy.
