Millennium Fellowship Project: Sanitation Crisis and its Impact on a Student. A case study of The University of Zambia.

The state of poor sanitation at the University of Zambia campus ranged from choked sewers, weedy environment, littered environment, inadequate sanitation facilities, overflowing refuse containers and sale of food at insanitary food vending stations. Some student residential facilities have had malfunctioning or obsolete drainage and sewage system. Toilet to student ratio, Bathroom to student ratio, Water cut, Stagnant water due to poor drainage, blocked sewers, and overflowing septic tanks or soak ways may create adverse health effects.

This project was designed to assess the impacts of water and sanitation inadequacies in the academic environment. It investigated the direct effect of clean water access on attendance of the student.
The overall objective of the project included making the students understand the importance of a clean and sanitized environment through awareness creation and to make them understand that they have a role to play in water, sanitation and hygiene issues.

The specific objective was to help bring about change in the University with respect to sanitation and hygiene.

The project directly benefited a total of about 300 plus students of which 200 plus are women and 100 plus are men. Not only this but also the general workers who were responsible for maintaining cleanliness at the campus.
