Millennium Fellowship Project: Climate Action

Ecosystems are collapsing due to climate change, life support mechanisms are also being destroyed. Climate change is a threat ravaging the Horn of Africa thereby causing drying up of lakes, intensification of natural disasters and disruption of crop yields, terrorism acts, conflicts, natural resource competition and infectious diseases. It is by and large a result of our own actions. Climate change also exacerbates the threat of global warming that is already being felt everywhere in the world. Global warming hinders access to natural resources and interferes with crop yields leading to food insecurity and the scarcity of water resources. The water resources are important in agricultural activities and food production which is necessary for well-being of people. Climate change can be mitigated by offering sustainable education at community level, waste reduction, minimizing carbon footprints, wise use of wetlands resources and embracing reduce, reuse and recycle methods.
It is against this backdrop that our cohort came up with Adopt-a-River initiative as a way of saving the ecosystem. The aim of the Adopt-a-River project is mainly to create awareness as well as an understanding amongst students and communities at large on the importance of taking care of our scarce water resources and to enable their participation in the protection and management of these resources in an integrated manner. This initiative involves empowering and mobilizing youth groups, students and institutions with the aim of addressing challenges faced in efforts to achieve sustainability. They adopt nearby rivers, monitor pollution and levels of water at selected points then they restore and conserve them
