Millennium Fellowship Project: EmpowHer
"My project aims to empower women in Northern Eastern Kenya and other young women in Cushitic communities by addressing the significant issues that they face. These issues include inadequate access to education, the widespread practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), and limited economic opportunities and empowerment for women. Through my project, I hope to bring about meaningful change and empower women in my community and beyond.
As one of the project objectives , I have conceptualised a way to link victims to local authorities through either an app or a dedicated phone line where they can contact the authorities and locate the nearest hospital in the case of mutilation. This app could also offer virtual counseling to aid victims in overcoming the psychological effects of FGM as well as physical effects by connecting victims to specialists in reconstruction surgeries. The app would be a useful tool in ensuring that victims receive the necessary medical attention and support, while also enabling the authorities to take appropriate action against perpetrators.
Another aspect of the project will be a comprehensive approach to addressing the issues, including community education and empowerment, policy and legal reform, and engagement of stakeholders in both the public and private sectors. To tackle the inadequate education issue, we plan to increase awareness and education about the benefits of education for girls and women, as well as the negative consequences of not receiving an education. We will also provide avenues for girls to acquire scholarships and financial support to assist families who may struggle to afford education costs. Moreover, we will collaborate with local community leaders, including religious and traditional leaders, to obtain support and encourage attendance of female students."
