Millennium Fellowship Project: Gentrification and Decolonization: Reclaiming Communities
The project, Gentrification and Decolonization: Reclaiming Communities, aims to
educate the youth on the impacts of gentrification and decolonization on historically
marginalized communities. It will organize school visits to engage students in the
discussions as well as lead community service projects. Students will gain both
theoretical and practical knowledge about the implication of gentrification and connect it to the broader patterns of coloization and exploitation. They will engage in
conversations at the intersection of gentrification and decolonization, including
unbalanced power dynamics, biased justice systems, indigenous sovereignty, and
inequality. We believe the efforts toward addressing these challenges should be
community-led and this project will cultivate a sense of civic responsibility among the youth from both a local and global lens.
