Afe Babalola University Ido | Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 3

" As a medical student, most of my learning and training is science-based. But with the opportunity to be a Millennium Fellow I will also enhance the skills of teamwork and creativity outside the hospital setting. This will ultimately make me a better doctor and a stronger and more effective advocate for positive change and impact. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Food for Heart Initiative
The Food for Heart Initiative aims to educate people on the relationship between food and cardiovascular health until this knowledge becomes common and accessible to everyone.
To achieve this, we have started by organizing outreaches and seminars on campus and in nearby communities. So far, we have successfully conducted two outreaches and two seminars, reaching and educating approximately 50 people.
Looking ahead, we plan to expand our impact by leveraging social media platforms to spread awareness and by collaborating with like-minded organizations that share our vision. Through these efforts, we aim to create a healthier, more informed society.
About the Millennium Fellow
Gonto Salihu Umar is a Final Year Medical Student of Afe Babalola University currently on the medical campus of Federal Teaching Hospital in the hills of Ido-Ekiti in South western Nigeria. Although originally being from the Northern part of Nigeria the search for knowledge has brought him to a different geopolitical zone of the country and in doing so exposed him to different cultures, personalities and heritages. Although all in their beauty, it has also shown him the different socio-economic challenges and inequities that he has also seen at home in Northern Nigeria. This among other experiences has endeared him to become a strong advocate of positive social impact. This is evident in his participation in many associations both local and national, charity organizations, and even volunteer groups whose purpose are to make their positive change in all the ways they can, both minor and major. He has passionately been part of different initiatives and campaigns both physically and online that address these challenges. He is also a Sustainable Development Goals advocate as he believes it is one of the most effective and holistic ways to approach these inequities. In the field of Health which he is currently studying in, Climate Change, Industry and even Food and Water. He hopes that with the honor of being a Class of 2024 Millennium Fellow he will also learn, grow and be a part of efforts in positive impact who may seem little but will have massive effects.
