Millennium Fellowship Project: Youth Grief Support Groups
I formed and facilitated grief support groups that ran for about ten weeks. These groups were a safe space for grieving students to express their grief and show up for it. We showed up for a 2-hour session every week online and physically, alternating with some sessions led by the campus wellness center. The 13-member support group comprised students from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Nigeria studying at the African Leadership University. I purpose to continue with this initiative for every new cohort at the University with plans to do introduce it to other young people even outside my Uni
About the Millennium Fellow
Ann Gichure is a software engineering student at African Leadership University in Rwanda, passionate about leveraging technology to create awareness and impact on grief and mental health. With a background in using digital marketing to craft content that educates and supports those dealing with grief, Ann aims to build a global platform where individuals can safely share their grief journeys and connect with others. Ann co-runs a podcast in Nairobi that demystifies grief through candid conversations with guests who share their experiences and has recently established grief support groups at ALU, providing a weekly safe space for students to discuss their grieving process. With aspirations to become an expert in Marketing and Analytics, Ann also plans to pursue a minor in psychology to deepen her understanding of human behavior, emotions, and mental processes, which are crucial in addressing grief and mental health.
