" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it offers me the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and amplify my impact on youth mental health, empowering the next generation to prioritize their well-being. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: EmpowerHER
EmpowerHER addresses the growing mental health challenges that young girls in Africa face, including stigma, a lack of resources, and cultural barriers to care. EmpowerHER provides culturally sensitive mental health resources, peer mentorship, and digital access to professional counseling via a mobile app, thereby making mental health care more accessible and stigma-free. The goal is to help young girls develop resilience, self-esteem, and emotional well-being by teaching them coping skills and fostering a supportive community. EmpowerHER provides a safe environment for young girls to share their lived experiences through storytelling and culturally relevant content. This initiative drives social impact by improving mental health outcomes, lowering stigma around seeking help, and empowering young girls to advocate for themselves and their peers, thereby fostering healthier and future generations
About the Millennium Fellow
Oluwatofunmi Adekanye, a 20-year-old student at the African Leadership University, is a dedicated advocate for youth mental health. Hailing from Nigeria, she recognized the importance of mental well-being early in life, inspiring her to pursue a degree focused on leadership and community development. Actively involved in student organizations, Oluwatofunmi helps to organise campaigns to raise awareness about mental health issues among her peers. She also volunteers with local NGOs, facilitating support groups and using social media to promote mental wellness. Her ultimate goal is to establish a non-profit organization that provides essential mental health resources for young people across Africa.
