" All issues of development go hand in hand. Women empowerment and food security for instance have the potential to transform the lives of many. I believe
that the basis for women's empowerment is good education, health and nutrition, and a safe and resilient community, as all of this forms the foundation for a healthy life. I am excited to be a part of the Millennium Fellowship as it will motivate me to do better by connecting me with like-minded individuals, hence increasing my social impact by enhancing my problem-solving skills
and helping me come up with better, sustainable projects to benefit the community. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Rising Above The Floods (RAF)
Rising Above the Floods (RAF) was a community based flood risk management and mitigation campaign for Islamabad. It was a collaborative project led by two dedicated Millennium fellows from Bahria University. This initiative minimized flood risk by hosting awareness sessions and holding workshops for vulnerable communities and university students. The project assessed the effectiveness of current flood risk management practices and explored innovative solutions, including early warning systems and community-based interventions. University students were engaged through a workshop that educated them on flood risk management, educating and encouraging them to propose new management and risk mitigation strategies. An awareness campaign promoted community engagement and preparedness. The project aimed to outline innovative recommendations for future improvements in flood risk management in order to strengthen the resilience of communities to disasters by reducing the number of people affected by them. The project actively involved the students of Bahria University and vulnerable community members by raising awareness, educating and encouraging innovation through workshops. During the Millennium Fellowship period, the project focused on educating university peers about the importance of flood risk mitigation and flood management through a seminar, supplemented by distributing informative posters across campus.
