" I am acutely interested in the role of the academy as a site for social and global change. The Millennium Fellowship provides me with a collaborative and bold community of scholars across the world, through which I am excited to enact change in alignment with UNAI principles. The skills I gain through this fellowship will foster my passion for research, community engagement, and learning. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Southeast Asian Studies: Community and Academic Development

My project aims to increase representation of Southeast Asian communities and studies in academia. Throughout the Millennium Fellowship, I have collaborated with Brown University faculty and local organizations (including the Southeast Asian Studies Initiative, Rhode Island Cultural Society, and the Swearer Center for Public Service) to develop a new course to be taught in Spring 2025, focusing on arts and literature of Southeast Asia. My project also involved a ten week collaboration with the local non-profit Cultural Society and its ongoing mission to create Rhode Island's first AAPI History Museum, where I chiefly focused on developing an AAPI zine library, as well as supporting other communications and outreach initiatives for their History Education Center.

About the Millennium Fellow

Samantha Ho is studying English and Art History at Brown University. She is passionate about how the arts and education can be leveraged as tools for social change. Through their social and cultural influence, Samantha hopes to engage in social impact work through institutions such as the academy and the museum. As a Millennium Fellow, her project is dedicated to creating a community-engaged university course dedicated to exploring the arts, culture, and history of postcolonial Asian countries, working in tandem with local AAPI and particularly Southeast Asian organizations.
