" Dealing with and witnessing hardship throughout my life has instilled in me a desire to become a servant leader: one who utilizes the privileges afforded to them as a vehicle to drive social change. I'm excited to be a Millennium Fellow to forward my vision of a better future for the nation. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Equity In Civic Education

My project tackles a critical but often overlooked issue: the unequal access to civic education, particularly among marginalized communities. It's a problem that's been swept under the rug for too long, but its implications are profound. When certain groups of young people, especially those from underserved communities, are denied access to quality civic education, they are effectively shut out from participating fully in our democracy. As a result, students in the most vulnerable communities never feel valued, never feel heard, never feel appreciated, and turn away from civic engagement because of it. Many students grow up without a basic understanding of how government works or how they can engage in the democratic process. But here's the thing: civic education is not just about learning facts and figures; it's about empowering young people to become informed and active citizens. It's about teaching them how to critically analyze information, engage in civil discourse, and advocate for change. By neglecting this aspect of education, we're doing a disservice to our youth and to the future of our democracy. I'm working to improve civic education worldwide by developing stronger civic curriculum, sharing impactful civic research, and advocating for civic requirements in school districts globally.
