Millennium Fellowship Project: Bangladesh GreenWave

The Bangladesh Greenwave Project is an innovative and community-driven initiative aimed at addressing environmental challenges, particularly in urban settings like Dhaka City. This project focuses on fostering sustainable urban development, enhancing air quality, and mitigating the effects of climate change through collective action and strategic interventions. Objectives: 1. Improve Air Quality: Combat air pollution through urban greenery and tree-planting campaigns. 2. Community Engagement: Raise awareness about environmental issues and empower communities to take sustainable actions. 3. Urban Heat Island Mitigation: Use green infrastructure to reduce urban temperatures and create more habitable spaces. 4. Research and Advocacy: Generate data-driven insights to advocate for environmental policies and urban planning reforms. Key Campaign: "Let's Breathe Well" The "Let's Breathe Well" campaign is a flagship initiative of the Greenwave Project. This campaign targets air pollution, particularly in high-density urban areas like Dhaka, by promoting urban greenery and advocating for clean air. Activities Under the Campaign: - Tree Planting Drives: Organizing community tree-planting events in neighborhoods, schools, and public spaces. - Workshops and Seminars: Educating residents about air pollution, its health impacts, and how urban greenery can help. - Community Action Plans: Collaborating with local stakeholders to design and implement solutions tailored to specific areas. Impact Goals: - Enhanced urban greenery coverage in Dhaka. - Reduction in localized air pollution levels. - Increased community awareness and participation in environmental sustainability. - Policy recommendations for greener urban planning. By integrating grassroots action with research and advocacy, the Greenwave Project seeks to create a sustainable and breathable future for urban communities.

About the Millennium Fellow

Farzana Shamsery is an Environmental Science student at Bangladesh University of Professionals, Dhaka. Growing up in the world’s most polluted city, Farzana developed a deep passion for environmental preservation. Motivated by witnessing the destruction of nature, she actively engages in climate action, including managing a nationwide awareness program for UNDP "Let's breathe well" campaign where she promoted that by planting trees it is possible to tackle air pollution. As a leading volunteer at the Environment Club, Farzana is spearheading the "Greenwave" project, which promotes rooftop and wall gardening to combat heat waves. Aspiring to be a Millennium Fellow, Farzana aims to amplify her impact globally, driving sustainable change and inspiring future environmental leaders.
