" I am very passionate about giving back to my community through civic engagement, as I believe this is an essential step towards community resilience, social change, and personal growth. The Millennium Fellowship will give me the opportunity to further improve my critical thinking and problem-solving skills whilst I will get to connect with and learn from many like-minded peers from all around the world. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: EduEquality

EduEquality is a joint project between Campus Director Jazmin Velenczei and Fellow Antonia Rieder at Central European University in Vienna, Austria. Given the international environment on our campus, we wanted our project to focus on an issue relevant to international students. Consequently, EduEquality aims to raise awareness of international students' challenges in Austria, targeting Sustainable Development Goal 4, quality education. To achieve this, EduEquality conducts surveys about international students’ experiences, difficulties, and why they decided to study abroad. EduEquality also invites international students to submit art pieces, such as pictures or poems, that portray their international students' experiences. Afterward, such responses will be displayed in our cafeteria on campus anonymously to remove the stigma around discussing academic pressure, mental health issues, homesickness, etc. Lastly, the end-of-project event will be incorporated into the exhibition, where students and staff from campus can come together to discuss such important topics.

About the Millennium Fellow

Jazmin Velenczei is a sophomore at Central European University, studying
philosophy, politics, and economics. Jazmin is very passionate about civic engagement, as she believes that both individual and collective action can significantly impact the well-being of our communities. As an advocate for social change, she volunteers to teach English to students from underprivileged backgrounds and to help the integration of homeless people in Vienna. As an international student, she is committed to removing the stigma around publicly discussing the challenges and hardships that international students and immigrants face through her project. After graduation, she hopes to earn a master's in economic development or international economics.
