" "As students, we must realize that our greatest power is our capacity for action. As global citizens, we must understand that it is our responsibility to act - whenever we percieve inequality, whenever we are faced with injustice. I believe in the Millennium Fellowship because it encourages young people, our most valuable resource, to be the change-makers they desire to be - by amplifying their voice, by giving them a platform, by creating a community for them. I think this is invaluable." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Listen to Your Heart
My Millennium Fellowship Project was to create and share a documentary about the state of LGBTQ+ rights in Hungary. In filming the documentary, I spent a substantial amount of time in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, researching and interviewing my relevant subjects. The people who have contributed to my film include community members, scholars, community organizers, and NGO founders.
About the Millennium Fellow
Johanna Önnemaria Öövel is currently completing her undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Central European University (Austria), where she applied in hopes of finding her path forward in the field of social advocacy. Although she was born in Hungary, she spent some time living in Belgium and France before graduating from the IB Program with a Bilingual Diploma in Croatia. She is now returning from her year abroad at Trinity College, Dublin. By joining the Millennium Fellowship with her project, she strives to shed light on the recent series of injustices suffered by the Hungarian LGBTQ+ community. She believes that documenting these will raise change-inspiring awareness, getting us closer to #10 of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
