Millennium Fellowship Project: The Taboo Talk
Menstruation is often surrounded by superstitions in rural South India, contributing to significant gender disparities in school attendance, especially in government institutions. Our initiative focuses on addressing this issue by conducting interactive, in-person sessions with students in government schools.
The goal is to break down taboos and foster curiosity and understanding about menstruation among both boys and girls. Through menstrual health education, we aim to challenge gender stereotypes, promote awareness, and emphasize that menstruation impacts everyone, irrespective of gender. By encouraging open discussions, we create a safe space where students can talk about personal hygiene, ask questions, and share their perspectives.
These sessions are designed to dismantle myths surrounding menstruation and normalize it as a natural aspect of life. Boys are encouraged to see menstruation as a family and community matter rather than solely a "female issue." The ultimate vision is to reduce stigma, enable boys and girls to discuss menstruation freely, and build a future where menstruation is no longer shrouded in shame. This local initiative aspires to inspire change globally.
