" I want to be a Millennium Fellow because it gives me the opportunity to create the change I want to see in the world. It will provide me with a mentor who can guide me through the journey and help me see my visions come to life. It will enable me to provide food to those in need, affecting the lives of people I couldn't reach without this program. Volunteer work is not always easy and it will be challenging, however, through the Millennium Fellowship, we will have a mentor who can guide us through the entire process and help us focus on what's important – impacting people and changing lives. It also provides us with a platform to address the issues that need to be changed, think about them, and put them into action. This fellowship will provide me with invaluable experience that will stay with me throughout my life. I know that I will have to tackle numerous barriers and go through several hardships to get to where I want to be with this program. It will also help me interact with the community I aim to help, and experience is what helps us grow as people, providing knowledge that reading alone cannot impart. This will help me in my future social impact work because I will make mistakes throughout this journey, but it will help me grow as a person, understand my priorities as a social worker, and focus on the things that will help me achieve my goals and best serve my community. It will help me become the best social worker I want to be and create the best change I want to see. "

About the Millennium Fellow
Riya Mukherjee is an undergraduate student pursuing a BSc in Psychology at Christ University's Kengeri campus, working towards her goal of entering the field of criminal psychology. She comes from a middle-class Bengali family who always provided her with what she needed and more, while reminding her that all the privileges she enjoys are simply due to the circumstances of her birth—something none of us have control over.
This upbringing made her realize how fortunate she was to be guaranteed basic necessities such as food, clothes, shelter, and safety, as well as the ability to live without fear of how she would make it to the next day. The safe, warm, and beautiful upbringing she had, thanks to her parents, made her aware of how many others face adversities and lack the things she and most people with similar socioeconomic backgrounds take for granted.
As someone in her position with the ability to make people's lives better, she believes it is her responsibility to make food available to those vulnerable to food insecurity.
