Millennium Fellowship Project: Combating Substance Abuse and Addiction

Combating substance abuse and Addiction:
Addiction and substance abuse have a relentless grip on individuals of different backgrounds and have negative consequences on society. Students who are addicted often have social problems, poor academic performance, and mental health issues, and are predisposed to infectious diseases. Studies suggest that at least 15% of the student population is reported to be abusing drugs. The statistics reveal a troubling reality and trend. The project addresses the causes of substance abuse and addiction, thus reducing the underlying negative effects it creates, increasing the academic performance of students in the university by improving their mental health and promoting SDG 3 - Good health and wellbeing. During the project we launched an educative awareness campaign, setting up a media handle where the subject of substance abuse and addiction will be discussed. During the project period, we partnered with student-related organizations on campus (health, student union etc ), expanding the scope/
impact of our project. This project was executed at campuses of Delta State University, and surrounding secondary schools reaching a total average of more than 300 students.
