Millennium Fellowship Project: HiveMinds - Campus Bee-Initiative
:The decline in bee populations around the world is an environmental crisis with significant implications for biodiversity and local ecosystems. In Kunshan and the surrounding Yangtze Delta region, the reduction of local pollinator species threatens local agriculture and native plant biodiversity. While there is growing awareness of these issues, opportunities for hands-on education about bees and environmental sustainability remain limited for students and community members alike. Our Hive Minds Beekeeping club, established in Fall Semester 2023, has since visited local beekeepers and organized hands-on educational activities around ten times. Unfortunately, the current lack of consistent support, especially financially, limits our capacity to provide students with a consitant and sustained experience that can deepen their environmental consciousness and knowledge while also benefitting the local beekepers. Our project seeks to establish a structured program for DKU students to regularly visit and collaborate with local beekeepers in the Jiangsu province, fostering community connections and environmental awareness. About the Millennium Fellow
Johann is a German/Spanish student currently pursuing studies at an American university in China. Passionate about sustainability, particularly renewable energy and offshore sustainble ocean solutions, Johann aims to leverage their unique global perspective to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. Outside of academics, Johann has developed a keen interest in apiculture, recognizing its vital role in maintaining our planet's biodiversity and is now beekeeping in his freetime to connect with local communities and bring people and nature closer together again.
