" We all have the potential to be great, and we achieve greatness when given the opportunity—so why not create that space for others? The Millennium Fellowship provides the platform for young leaders to make a meaningful impact on their communities, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond. That's my goal—I aspire to create an initiative where everyone can contribute to making a difference, no matter how small the effort. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Hope In Every Dose

Hope in Every Dose is a public health initiative aimed at reducing the growing number of preventable cancers caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in rural communities. This project seeks to address the critical issue of low awareness and limited access to HPV vaccination, particularly among young girls in underserved areas. Through sensitization campaigns and vaccination drives, the project educates girls on the dangers of HPV, its link to cervical cancer, and the importance of early vaccination as a preventive measure.
The project specifically targets girls in rural communities, providing them with crucial information about HPV and its associated risks. During the sensitization sessions, over 50 girls were educated on how HPV is transmitted, the potential health risks it poses, and how the HPV vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Following the awareness campaigns, 43 girls received the HPV vaccine, significantly improving their chances of preventing the onset of cervical cancer.
Hope in Every Dose not only works to reduce cancer risk but also empowers young girls with knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their health. The project aims to foster a culture of preventive care and promote wider community engagement in improving health outcomes for women in rural Nigeria. By tackling this issue head-on, the initiative lays the foundation for future campaigns that will expand the reach of HPV education and vaccination across even more communities, ultimately contributing to a healthier, cancer-free future for many women.

About the Millennium Fellow

Faith Onyemaechi is a fourth-year student at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, pursuing a five-year degree in Computer Engineering. Growing up in a rural area of Nigeria with limited access to technology, Faith's experiences inspired her to create the advocacy initiative "TechForAll." She is deeply committed to sustainable development, as demonstrated by her work with the WAAW Foundation to promote STEM education for girls, her collaboration with LEAP Africa to educate women and girls in Minna on proper menstrual hygiene, and her role as a RISE Applicant recruiter for the 2023 and 2024 application cycles. Additionally, Faith volunteers with Adore, where she provides health and wellness support to orphaned and vulnerable children. In the future, she envisions pursuing a master’s degree in policymaking and working with the United Nations to advocate for more diverse and inclusive policies.
