" "My drive is fueled by a deep commitment to helping improve the lives of others–with inclusion and empathy as guiding values. By being a part of the Millennium Fellowship Program, not only will I be surrounded by like-minded individuals with similar motivations, but will also gain the guidance, feedback, and leadership abilities necessary to put this initiative into action. I'm excited to learn more about the SDGs and UNAI principles and how I can make them a reality here on Georgia Tech campus or the Atlanta community." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Improving The Conditions Of Impoverished Communities

We are focused on improving access to resources in the impoverished population in Atlanta. We have done this by partnering with local nonprofits serving these populations to set up volunteer opportunities for GT students, including shelter building, supply handout in local encampments, and afterschool volunteering! We also have made efforts to raise money for a shower bus that we plan to build next semester, and collected donations via a food drive.

About the Millennium Fellow

Izabella Herrera-Nunez is a hardworking, bright, and young Biomedical Engineering student pursuing her fourth year at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She was born in Texas, but as a military child, has moved around to multiple states; her family now resides in Savannah, GA. Being a first-generation American with family from Honduras, Izabella's passion has always lied in helping people, specifically those suffering or in difficult situations with little to no access to healthcare. Now in college, she’s a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), Latin American Student Organization (LASO), and Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE), where she continues to help explore how to apply engineering principles into helping her community, all while remaining active around campus. She has also completed both a co-op and internship with Abbott Laboratories, a global leader in the healthcare industry, in their Atlanta, GA and Pleasanton, CA Heart Failure divisions. Izabella aspires to be in a professional field that allows her to continue navigating how to improve the health and lives of patients in need.
